Rehabilitation for Dizziness, Vertigo and Balance
(Vestibular Rehabilitation)
Dizziness is one of the commonest reasons people visit their GP. There are many pathologies that result in people experiencing dizziness, vertigo or a sense of being off balance. Balance is maintained by our visual, sensory and inner ear vestibular systems working together. If one of these systems is not working optimally then we tend to lose our balance and experience vertigo or dizziness.

Vestibular rehab aims too reduce the sensation of dizziness and improve balance.  A full assessment is completed to establish the cause of the symptoms, then a range of treatment/management strategies are suggested. These include balance retraining, education and relaxation technique. As well as exercises to encourage adaptation in the Vestibular system.

Conditions that benefit from Vestibular rehab include Benign Positional Paroxysmal Vertigo (BPPV), Vestibular Neuritis, Vestibular Hypofunction, Falls, Whiplash Associated Dizziness, Meniere’s disease, Migraines Related Dizziness, Postural Phobic Vertigo. Neurological conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis,Traumatic Brain Injury and Stroke, where dizziness is present, may also benefit.

Women’s Health
Pregnancy-related problems: antenatal advice and exercises, including treatment for back and pelvic girdle pain (formerly known as SPD) during and after pregnancy, and for postnatal problems, eg. separated tummy muscles (diastasis rectus abdominus).

Gynaecological problems: bladder and bowel problems, including incontinence, frequency, urgency and overactive bladder, constipation and problems controlling wind. Also pelvic floor exercises and advice given for pelvic organ prolapse and sexual pain or dysfunction. (These conditions may have a number of causes but are usually associated with weak pelvic floor muscles).

Chronic Fatigue/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME)
CFS/ME involves a complex range of symptoms that includes fatigue, malaise, headaches, sleep disturbance, difficulties with concentration and muscle pain. The pattern and intensity of symptoms vary between people, and during the course of each person’s illness. People often have symptoms for many years before CFS/ME is diagnosed. The causes and disease processes of CFS/ME are still not understood.
