About the course
History talking is an overlooked part of the treatment encounter, and is often shortened so objective assessment and treatment can be prioritised. However, modern research highlights the complex interaction of factors across the bio-psychosocial spectrum that underpins most pain disorders. Getting information across this spectrum, while building trust and a therapeutic relationship, is key to unlocking what is driving pain disorders. Indeed, evidence now shows that treatment outcome is strongly affected by the patient-therapist relationship. Few would disagree that listening, empathy, relationship building and communication are key factors in successful treatment; however, these skills are often assumed. This course is designed to equip physiotherapists with practical and clinically applicable skills around communication, relationship building, reflective listening and how to dispense information in ways that build therapeutic alliance.
About the trainer
Paul Sullivan has been developing and delivering training to a wide variety of health and social care professionals for 10 years. Initially, he began working with drug and alcohol users in residential services, specialist treatment units, young people’s services and primary care. It was while working in addictions that Paul became interested in the importance of the therapeutic alliance and how this improves treatment outcomes. Paul now specialises in developing and delivering training that facilitates lifestyle and behaviour change and in particular Motivational Interviewing. Paul has taught hundreds of professional workshops in Motivational Interviewing from introductory courses to more advanced applications, group work settings, mentoring and consultancy. Paul has recently become a member of the international Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and continues to promote the importance of collaborative working to enhance the treatment experience for both the patient and the practitioner.

- To collaboratively explore the patient story and recognise the factors which contribute to paindisorders.
- To gain a practical knowledge of key technical skills involved in consultation; this includes questioning,reflective listening and eliciting self-motivational statements.
- To provide information to patients in an engaging and collaborative way and negotiate treatmentplans.
- To challenge patients’ unhelpful beliefs around pain management in a non-confrontational andconstructive way.
- To work with more challenging patients, and to minimise the likelihood of difficult interactions.
