I was lucky enough to indulge in regular massages from Matt . I kept thinking I can’t be training hard (as I had endless energy and not a niggle in sight), until I missed an appointment… then I realised how much the sessions had helped my recovery, sleep patterns and positive mental attitude! Matt is a knowledgeable and trustworthy practitioner – he’s now listed as ‘essential’ under my kit list/training calendar!
Alison C – Ironman Triathlete and Long Distance Swimmer
Matt is friendly, professional, approachable, and skilled.
Matt employs a broad range of techniques, not having reduced his repertoire as I imagine happens when training is a distant memory and a masseur is weary of all the legs they have massaged over a longer career. And for the same reason, he is still highly responsive to feedback and has the skill to massage to the depth that is effective but doesn’t cause you to leap off the bed. He tailors the massage according to your needs – both your perception of what is needed, but also spending time on the areas that he will be aware need some attention because of his training and understanding of the body.
Matt is highly professional and doesn’t seem to rush, being willing to spend an extra two minutes to do a proper, thorough job. He is very friendly but without being distracted from the job in hand. As a female athlete, I feel the balance between friendliness and professionalism is an important one; Matt has found this balance and I am completely comfortable being massaged by him.
Having competed in to a high level in sport he he understands the needs of athletes, but would be helpful whatever your sporting goals.
Cat F – World No1 Age group Ironman Triathlete
Mathew volunteered his sports massage services to me in the winter of 2011. He worked with the Sheffield Swim Squad (which contains 12 GB Internationals) every Wednesday evening for 2 hours for 4 months, free of charge. From my point of view as the Head Coach, I have been very impressed with the direct work he has done with the swimmers, his communication skills with both myself and the swimmers, and his professionalism.
Putting the athlete at ease is a vital part of the job, and all of the swimmers were very happy with Mathew’s manner. All of the swimmers Matthew has worked with (including Olympian Ellie Faulkner) agreed that they felt much better after treatment, and asked if they could have a repeat treatment.
Mathew has without doubt helped us through the winter cycle, and contributed to the fantastic results the squad has achieved this in spring 2012. I have no hesitation in recommending Matthew for any future work.

Mathew Thompson participated in a research project at Worcester Warriors investigating the effects of massage on delayed onset muscle soreness and perceived rate of exertion during our pre-season 2012/13. He received excellent feedback from our players. I found him extremely professional and diligent and would not hesitate in recommending him.
