CEREBRAL PALSY IN ADULTS

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a lifelong condition caused by damage to the developing brain, most often occurring before, during, or shortly after birth. It affects the way the brain sends messages to muscles, leading to difficulties with movement, posture, and coordination.

While cerebral palsy does not worsen over time, its effects can change as people grow older. Common challenges faced by adults with cerebral palsy include:

  • Muscle tightness and contractures
  • Pain and fatigue
  • Reduced mobility or loss of walking ability
  • Joint stiffness and postural problems
  • Balance and coordination difficulties
  • Functional challenges with everyday tasks

Physiotherapy can play a vital role in maintaining function, reducing discomfort, and helping individuals stay active and independent. Even later in life, individuals often show potential for improved function and quality of life with the right support.

The Neuro team at Hallamshire Physiotherapy are highly experienced in working with adults with cerebral palsy, at all stages of life. Whether the goal is to maintain mobility, manage pain, or improve independence, we are here to help. We will carry out a thorough physiotherapy assessment to understand movement-related problems. This includes evaluating muscle tone, joint range, strength, balance, walking patterns, and functional ability. From this, a tailored rehabilitation plan can be developed to support individual goals and needs.
