Corticosteroid injections have been used in medical practice for many years and, when used appropriately, can provide significant relief from pain and inflammation. They are most effective when combined with an appropriate rehabilitation programme and are administered by our experienced physiotherapists in a safe, professional environment.
In many cases, a local anaesthetic is included in the injection to provide short-term pain relief immediately after the procedure.
While corticosteroid injections do not cure the underlying condition, they can:
• Significantly reduce pain and inflammation
• Allow you to move more freely
• Enable you to carry out rehabilitation exercises more effectively
• Target treatment directly to the problem area, reducing the risk of general side effects compared to long-term oral steroids
Common conditions treated with corticosteroid injections include:
• Osteoarthritis
• Tendinopathy
• Bursitis
• Frozen shoulder
Steroid injections are not effective for everyone, so a thorough assessment by a trained clinician is essential. They are most often recommended when:
• Pain is preventing you from progressing with physiotherapy
• Conservative management has been slow or unsuccessful
• Inflammation is a major factor in your symptoms
1. Assessment – Your physiotherapist will take a detailed history, carry out a clinical examination, and confirm your diagnosis.
2. Prescription – As corticosteroids are a prescribed medication, your physiotherapist will issue a prescription to you if the treatment is deemed suitable. You will then collect the medication from a local pharmacy before the injection appointment.
3. Safety Check – We will screen for risk factors, discuss possible side effects, and answer any questions.
4. Consent – If you are happy to proceed, you will be asked to sign a consent form.
5. Injection – The injection is carried out under sterile conditions using anatomical landmarks to guide needle placement.
The whole process is usually quick, and discomfort during the procedure is generally minimal.
The total cost of a corticosteroid injection is £205, which is made up of:
• £70 – Initial assessment and consultation with a physiotherapist.
• £135 – Prescription, medication and delivery of the injection, including follow up call.
If, following your assessment, the injection is not deemed suitable, you will only be charged for the assessment (£70).
