Mal de Débarquement Syndrome (MdDS) is a vestibular disorder that typically occurs after a person has been on a boat, ship, or sometimes even after traveling by plane. It’s characterized by a persistent sensation of motion, such as rocking or swaying, even when the person is on solid ground.
Symptoms can include:-
– Rocking or swaying.
– Unsteadiness/loss of balance.
– Disorientation.
These symptoms can last for days, weeks, or even longer, making daily activities challenging.
Aggravating factors include:-
– Being on your feet.
– Sometimes when lying down.
Caused by:
The exact cause of MdDS is not fully understood, but it is thought to be related to the brain’s adaptation to motion.
Typical cases include:-
– After water-based activities such as a cruise or sailing.
– Occasionally following flying.
Treatment:
– Time (usually resolves in 24 hours), if not then medications or vestibular rehabilitation are the recommended courses of action.
Vestibular rehabilitation comprises of re-training the vestibular system through exercises and the occasional use of technology.
