Possible Side Effects & Risks of Corticosteroid Injections
Although uncommon, side effects can occur. These include:
• Pain at the injection site for 1–2 days
• Infection (very rare, <1 in 10,000)
• Tendon damage or rupture
• Fat or skin changes (thinning or colour changes at the site)
• Blood sugar changes (in people with diabetes, up to 3 weeks)
• Allergic reactions (rare)
• Bruising
• Reduced antibody response during treatment
• Facial flushing (within 24–48 hours, usually short-lived)
• Breastfeeding effects (rare, temporary milk reduction reported)
• Lowered immune system or adrenal suppression (with repeated injections)
• Mood changes (rare psychiatric side effects – seek help immediately if these occur)
