Alan Carroll

MSc BSc

CHARTERED PHYSIOTHERAPIST

Hi, I’m Alan, I qualified from Glasgow Caledonian University in 1999 with a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy.

I carried out my rotational junior training post in Glasgow, before deciding to move to Sheffield, and since then I have worked primarily in musculoskeletal care for the NHS. After spending a few years working in specialised hospital-based clinical areas I progressed in 2008 to a static outpatient role in Primary Care, where I then developed; through clinical experience, peer supervision and appropriate training courses. Following this, I then undertook a strategic programme of supplementary study, including; injection therapy and non-medical prescribing, which permitted me to develop to my current role as an ‘Advanced Practice Physiotherapist’ which I have been carrying out for the last 7 years.

My primary duties in this role include: accurate diagnosing complex musculoskeletal conditions, building patient-centred multi-professional care plans incorporating the requesting of and clinical contextualisation of various radiological and haematological investigations, and regularly administering corticosteroid injections. This role has permitted me to work alongside and create clinical links with, and also benefit from training by some of Sheffield’s leading Orthopaedic, Rheumatology and Pain-Management Consultants.

In the earlier part of my career I also worked as a sports physiotherapist in elite rugby, performing a pitch side and injury treatment role for Currie RFC, based on the outskirts of Edinburgh, and in a similar role in the world of football at the academy of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, which gave me excellent exposure in dealing with injuries in sport and also within the pressurised environment of professional sport.

In addition, I have worked delivering physiotherapy care in the private sector across the South Yorkshire region gaining experience in both the clinic and occupational healthcare settings, working with clients complaining of musculoskeletal issues.

Throughout my career I have maintained a strong interest around evidence based practice, I completed my MSc Clinical Research in 2013 and have held the role of Audit and Clinical Effectiveness Lead for Musculoskeletal Allied Health Professionals at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust since 2017.

Away from physiotherapy, you will often find me coaching my 10 year-old daughters football team. Recreationally, I enjoy participation in most team sports with particular emphasis on football, together with exercise activity such as working out at the gym and running.
